According to an old saying Baba Budhangiri (muslim saint) in the 17th century got some coffee seeds hidden with him while coming from Mecca. Britishers also played a major in the coffee cultivation here by setting up the Central Coffee Research Instituion (CCRI) in chikmagalur.
